Statement by Akio Yamaguchi, Chairperson of Keizai Doyukai on Result of 51st Lower House General Election
February 8, 2026
Akio Yamaguchi
Chairperson, Keizai Doyukai
The ruling coalition has substantially increased its seats in the House of Representatives as a result of the 51st general election held today. We interpret this result as a reflection of the broad public call for the implementation of the key policy measures outlined during the campaign period.
Meanwhile, we cannot overlook the insufficient presentation regarding the implementation of these measures, particularly concerning funding sources and operational roadmaps. We call on the ruling and opposition parties to present a medium- to long-term vision Japan should aim at, supported by concrete measures to realize them. We hope for the broad public discussions in this regard through thorough deliberations and elaborate explanations in the Diet.
Japan faces immediate challenges, including worsening livelihoods due to inflation, labor shortages, social security reform, diplomatic/national security, and the maintenance of fiscal disciplines. Whereas, from a long-term horizon, it is essential to achieve prosperous future based on the signals of improving economic growth, by accelerating the transformation from the economy and society built on the premise of population growth and long-lasting deflation. To confront all these challenges head-on, we call on the government--now backed by a fresh public mandate--to advance far-reaching reforms, even when they contain painful measures.
