Statement by Yoshimitsu Kobayashi, Chairman of Keizai Doyukai
on UK Parliament's Rejection of Government's Brexit Deal
January 16, 2019
Yoshimitsu Kobayashi
Chairman, Keizai Doyukai
- The House of Commons of the United Kingdom has overwhelmingly voted down the Government's Brexit deal negotiated with the European Union. With the UK's scheduled departure approaching, we are concerned about the increasing possibility of no-deal Brexit, which could dampen the UK economy and impact Japanese businesses.
- We hope for every effort to be made, such as seeking the extension of the negotiation period or retraction of Brexit itself, to prevent disruptions in the future. Meanwhile, Japanese businesses will be requested to implement contingency plans in the event of the unexpected, with a sense of alertness on the development of the situation, going forward.
- We request the Japanese government to reiterate its concerns and appeal to the UK government and to promote discussions for the UK-Japan economic partnership hereafter.
