Statement by Yoshimitsu Kobayashi, Chairman of Keizai Doyukai
On Japan-China-South Korea Summit

May 9, 2018

Yoshimitsu Kobayashi
Chairman, Keizai Doyukai

  1. The leaders of Japan, China, and South Korea have met in Tokyo for their first trilateral summit in two-and-a-half years. Japan has managed to host this summit. China has showed its readiness for open talks with neighboring nations and South Korea has played its constructive role to be a bridge with North Korea. In order to solve the regional challenges, the three leaders have demonstrated leadership and made efforts to take a new step forward toward Northeast Asia's peace and stability. We sincerely welcome it.
  2. It is particularly important that the three, through close talks on North Korea, have shared the understanding of the Korean Peninsula's full denuclearization and the relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions to be implemented. We hope that the outcome of this summit and initiatives such as the upcoming United States-North Korea summit will lead to a clear path going forward to ease tensions on the Korean Peninsula.
  3. We also highly appreciate that the summit has brought the new momentum toward the acceleration of future-orientated cooperation among the three nations, in areas such as further globalization and free trade, infrastructure development in Asia, and promotion of people-to-people and cultural exchanges. We expect Japanese government to continue to demonstrate strong leadership in developing the partnership framework among the three nations further, so that it will contribute to peace and prosperity in the region and the international community.
