Statement by Yoshimitsu Kobayashi, Chairman of Keizai Doyukai
On Outcome of US-Japan Summit

February 11, 2017

Yoshimitsu Kobayashi
Chairman, Keizai Doyukai

  1. The U.S.-Japan summit was held on February 10 (US local time) for the first time after President Trump’s inauguration. Both leaders first reaffirmed the importance of the U.S.-Japan alliance, leading to the first step to strengthen their friendship and trust relationship. We welcome the result.
  2. The significance of deepening the U.S.-Japan trade and investment relationship was confirmed and, going forward, U.S. Vice President Pence and Japanese Deputy Prime Minister Aso will lead a cross-sectoral dialogue in a new framework. There is a concern over the friction arising during the dialogue on currency and trade issues. We, however, expect our government to provide an elaborate presentation on the record of our corporate investment and other contributions in the U.S. and also, to calmly pursue constructive discussions on mutually beneficial agenda such as potential U.S.-Japan collaboration in infrastructure development.
  3. Various statements and actions of President Trump have become controversial and the approvals of nominees for top posts in the new administration are delayed. Meanwhile, there are some realistic adjustments visible in policies such as immigrant entry restriction and reviewing of Cross-Strait Relations. Going forward, we will continue our focus on the first 100 days of the new administration after inauguration with the State of the Union Address as one of the key matters.
