Statement by Yoshimitsu Kobayashi, Chairman of Keizai Doyukai
On Winning of Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine by Honorary Professor Yoshinori Ohsumi of Tokyo Institute of Technology

October 3, 2016

Yoshimitsu Kobayashi
Chairman, Keizai Doyukai

Honorary Professor Yoshinori Ohsumi of Tokyo Institute of Technology was awarded today the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. I am delighted and proud of his award as his junior in study who spent days in youth at Department of Basic Science, College of Arts and Sciences of University of Tokyo. His significant achievement marks Japanese scientists' winning the Nobel Prize for 3 years in a row, following Professor Emeritus Satoshi Omura of Kitasato University in the category of Physiology or Medicine in 2015.

I hope that “Discoveries of mechanisms for autophagy” the prize was made for will contribute to strengthen Japan's competitiveness as an advanced medical care country through realizing the application to treatment for diseases such as Alzheimer's dementia and cancers.
