Statement by Yasuchika Hasegawa, Chairman of Keizai Doyukai
On Start of Lower House Official Election Campaign

December 2, 2014

Yasuchika Hasegawa
Chairman, Keizai Doyukai

  1. Japan is now facing a crucial question of whether a private sector-led sustainable growth could be realized with the aging population and a declining birth rate. The upcoming Lower House election provides political parties with an opportunity of competition on policies for striking a balance between economic growth and fiscal consolidation.
  2. The social security system reform is also one of the top priorities we cannot avoid going forward. We request each political party to show to the public more concrete alternatives with regard to a blueprint of the sustainable social security system during the period of the official election campaign.
  3. In order to achieve the sustainability in economic growth, social security systems, and fiscal conditions, it is inevitable to rectify the inequality among generations which will result in the excessive burdens of the younger generation in the future. We hope that each individual of all generations participate in the voting, bearing that in mind.
