Statement by Yasuchika Hasegawa, Chairman of Keizai Doyukai
On Outcome of Japan-China Summit

November 10, 2014

Yasuchika Hasegawa
Chairman, Keizai Doyukai

  1. We welcome Japan-China summit held between Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and President Xi Jinping for the first time in three years. The summit resulted in the launch of talks aimed at an early establishment of the maritime communication mechanism which has been an urgent issue to prevent an unintended military clash in the East China Sea, while deepening the understanding for the perceptions of history of the two nations. We are hopeful that the summit will be the first big step toward improving the relations between the world's second- and third- largest economies. The efforts of two leaders to restore the bilateral ties from broad and long-term perspectives are highly appreciated.
  2. We expect that initiatives for further improvement of the Japan-China relations will be realized from the original viewpoint of the Mutually Beneficial Relationship based on Common Strategic Interests by taking the opportunity of this summit as the improvement of the relations plays an important role for the peace and prosperity not only in the East Asian region but in the Asia-Pacific region as a whole. We as business executives will carry out our own initiatives toward further development of the Japan-China economic ties by making a collective effort across the business community.
