On the decision for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic games

September 8, 2013

Takeshi Niinami
Vice Chairman,
Chairman of the Committee to Support Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Bid,
Keizai Doyukai

Tokyo was chosen as the host of the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games at the 125th IOC meeting today in Buenos Aires. We believe that this is the result of the joint efforts of politicians, government officials and business and are delighted with the success of our campaign.

Back in the 1960s, thanks to the efforts of older generations, we were able to nurture our hopes and dreams for the future through hosting the Olympic Games in Tokyo. Now the responsibility is upon us to make the Tokyo 2020 Games a success, and thereby encourage the young people of today to live up to their hopes and dreams, and to support their country.

We need to be creative about how we host the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Tokyo, so that the Games can help revitalize the Japanese economy, and provide an incomparable opportunity for the people of the world to visit Japan and appreciate its unique attractions, such as Japanese cuisine and hospitality. We think Japan is in a unique position to set the standard for Paralympic Games in the future, with its barrier-free infrastructure and its goal of developing an increasingly global and inclusive society for disabled people. This goal is achievable in the 7 years before the Games begin, and we at the Keizai Doyukai are fully committed to supporting such initiatives.
