Statement by Kengo Sakurada, Chairman of Keizai Doyukai
on Result of 49th Lower House General Election

November 1, 2021

Kengo Sakurada
Chairman, Keizai Doyukai

PDF

  1. The ruling coalition has secured a majority in the House of Representatives as a result of its 49th general election. We welcome the result that will keep the efforts rolling toward the realization of the "new capitalism" advocated by Prime Minister Kishida. Now, Japan is facing a last chance to revive from the long slump. From this and a medium- to long-term perspective, the ruling parties are requested to initiate a robust policy debate.
  2. Selection of our future or government was the most talked-about theme of the candidates. The voters are deemed to have responded by showing their sense of tension, diversity, and regeneration in the politics, as well as its continuity. We request the ruling and opposition parties to look at the election result sincerely, and face the parliamentary debate and the management of the government going forward.
  3. The crystallization of the "new capitalism" is nothing but redesigning of the national paradigm. It is not the issue we can solve within a few months or so, and the answer is not on the path along with the conventional growth strategy. At the top of the agenda for Japan's future are fiscal health, social security, climate change, energy, and economic/national security. We hope that the Diet will develop an earnest debate on these issues, reflecting the voices of diverse stakeholders and incorporating a comprehensive vision.
