On Official Start of Tokyo Gubernatorial Election Campaign

1. Tokyo gubernatorial election campaign has officially started today. Japan's capital city faces various challenges that need solutions. Just name a few, preparation for holding Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic games, readiness for an epicentral earthquake, solving an issue of children on day-care waiting list, and response to the rapidly-aging baby-boomer generation as well as enhancing attractiveness and international competitiveness as a capital city.
   The upcoming gubernatorial election plays an important role in choosing a leader capable of steering the Tokyo Metropolitan Government toward a solution of these issues.
2. Thus, we request each candidate to upgrade the policy debate by presenting his or her own vision and concrete measures required to realize such visions. We hope that a leader best qualified to run the Government will be selected by voters who carefully listen to the debate and cast responsible votes.
