Statement by Kengo Sakurada, Chairman of Keizai Doyukai
on Literature Survey to Select Final Disposal Site for Nuclear Waste
October 9, 2020
Kengo Sakurada
Chairman, Keizai Doyukai
- Two municipalities in the northernmost Japanese prefecture of Hokkaido responded to the government-led literature survey, which selects a final disposal site for high-level radioactive waste. Suttsu Town has applied for the survey, and Kamoenai Village has accepted the government's survey request. We respect their decisions, which we deem are important in taking a step toward resolving the issue to be settled by the current generation, rather than leaving the efforts with the future generations.
- We request the government to present the survey details including scientific data to be collected for analysis, safety measures to be taken, and a vision of regional development, in an easy-to-understand manner. In addition, the government is requested to make its utmost efforts to dispel anxieties of the local residents, by continuing elaborate explanation and having a lot of dialogue with them.
